Who eats badly is less fertile? Get rid of the crap on the table!

Men who eat foods high in trans fats (also found written as TFA), including takeout, fried foods, cakes and packaged cookies are likely to cut their chance of having a baby in half. This is the result of a study conducted by some scientists at Harvard University.

While it’s long been known that overweight or obese women have a harder time getting pregnant than thinner people, new research suggests that even those who manage to stay in line despite consuming crap of all kinds still hurt their fertility. .

Three new studies presented at a US fertility conference suggest that consuming high levels of fat:

  1. lowers the couple’s chances of achieving pregnancy
  2. causes damage to the ovaries
  3. produces poor quality embryos

A team from the Harvard School of Public Health and Massachusetts General Hospital examined the impact of a high intake of trans fat (TFA) on the fertility rates of 141 men trying to conceive through IVF. They found that fertilization rates were lowest in couples where the men had the diets highest in trans fats.

In food, TFAs are generated from three main sources (source: European Food Information Council – EUFIC):

  • bacterial transformation of unsaturated fatty acids during chewing of ruminants such as cows and sheep (which pass into fat, meat and milk);
  • hydrogenation or industrial hardening of oils for use in spreads, and of fats for baked goods;
  • heating and frying oils at high temperatures.

Wrong food causes decreased fertility

Men who ate healthily had 83% of IVF successes . Those who ate worse (in which 20% of their calories came from trans fat) were only 47% successful .

A progressive decline in fertility has also been noted as the diet deteriorates . This inverse proportionality suggests that food is precisely the cause of the decrease in fertility.

In another separate study, researchers at the University of Colorado found that female mice fed a high-fat diet had damaged ovaries and low fertility rates, even though they weren’t overweight.

Researchers believe that high-fat diets trigger a low-grade state of chronic inflammation in the body that impairs fertility, perhaps because the body “thinks” it is under stress and therefore not in the right shape to raise a child. .

A third study conducted at universities in North and South Carolina found that women who obtained low levels of viable embryos from IVF treatment and who had great difficulty getting pregnant also had high levels of elaidinic acid in their bloodstream, suggesting who ate a lot of fried foods.

All these studies presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) in Baltimore demonstrate that not only obesity but also poor diet are enemies of fertility. They also demonstrate that you don’t need to focus only on a woman’s weight when pregnancy doesn’t arrive but the man’s lifestyle should be investigated.

In recent years, the number of sperm in men has dropped from 20 to 15 million per ml. Diet is undoubtedly a contributing factor to the decline in sperm quality and therefore in the fertility of couples in general.

Therefore take advantage of these indications and start eating in a healthy and complete way! It costs nothing to try
