What is the right age to have a child?
All those who are constantly pressed by the question ” when are you going to have a child ?” they can now defend themselves with considerations that come from a study that analyzed the data collected in Denmark from more than one and a half million women aged between 25 and 60 years.
According to the results obtained having children later in life pays off in the truest sense of the word.
From a strictly economic point of view, in fact, women who wait to have children after the age of 30 tend to accumulate more money during their career and therefore not have economic problems.
The study also highlights that
- Women who have a child before the age of 25 lose about 2-2.5 full years of salary
- Women who have had a baby before the age of 28 earn less throughout their working career.
- Women who delay childbirth until after age 31 earn more during their careers than women without children regardless of whether or not they have a college degree.
- Those who delay having children until age 37 add about a year and a half extra salary to their lifetime earnings.
What is best for finances however is not the same however from a reproductive standpoint.
Even if there are those who get pregnant at the age of 42 on the first attempt, in general, pregnancy occurs more easily when the woman is younger.
Complications are also less likely at a younger age.
By now, however, in all industrialized countries the average age of first pregnancy is moving well above 30 years of age .
The possibility of birth control but also the assisted reproduction treatments that have allowed women to have more control over their bodies have contributed to this outcome.
The economic side also has its relevance. In fact, how many couples wait for economic stability before starting a family? And this stability very often does not arrive before the age of 35.
The problem is that after 35 complications are lurking: need for caesarean section, gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, increased risk of genetic abnormalities… The higher the mother’s age, the more chromosomes tend not to divide properly. Also for this reason, the incidence of spontaneous abortions increases with age.
As for the probability of conception per month with targeted intercourse, this does not exceed 25% even at 20, and at 30 it drops by 5% reaching 20%.
Typically 65% of women get pregnant within the first 6 months of trying.
All these considerations therefore elect around 30 as the best age to start a family
Considerations
Reading the data of this study the question that arises spontaneously is
Is there really a better age? And if so, is it really necessary that it should be dictated by economic issues?
Is it the children that don’t allow mothers to have a career or is it the world of work that doesn’t allow mothers with children to have a career?
Is it really necessary to resort to egg freezing in order to guarantee a late-life pregnancy in the name of work? Or is it who employs me who should guarantee me the possibility of becoming a mother, sooner or later, without jeopardizing my career and my job position?
Is the home-work conciliation of a certain level really a utopia?
We conducted an interesting survey on our site and these are the data collected.
