Toy containers: 10 solutions to keep the bedroom tidy
Has keeping toys in order become your mission? Help yourself with baskets, boxes and drawers: toy containers will allow you to take back your space!
If there is a universal problem that all parents have in common, it is that of teaching children to be tidy . The biggest difficulty, for example, is getting them used to keeping even just the bedroom in order which, either due to too many toys or due to the small size of the room, usually looks more like a battlefield than a place to sleep.
However, having the bedroom (and often also the other rooms) with toys scattered almost everywhere is the signal that it is probably necessary to facilitate the tidying up operation and involve the children in the strategy to be adopted. This will give you the opportunity to teach them important values such as responsibility towards others, respect for the environment and taking care of things.
Small rules to keep toys in order
Here are some good rules that will help you and your children keep their toys in order:
- Sort the toys into homogeneous groups: dolls in one container, cars in another, books in yet another, etc.
- Make sure containers are easily accessible.
- Label the containers . For toddlers who can’t read, label a photo of the contents of a basket so they can easily learn where their toys go. For older children, use words.
- Use colored bins as a method of sorting toys: Placing matching colored toys in their respective bins is a system that even a two-year-old will be able to figure out.
- Use the “one toy in, one toy out” rule. This will make children get used to picking up a new toy only after putting away the one they no longer use.
- Whenever a toy breaks beyond repair, throw it away.
- When a toy is no longer used, ask your parents to donate it to someone.
- Respect these rules even when children will receive a lot of gifts such as birthdays or Christmas.
Toy containers: here are 10 useful ideas
As you have understood from the little rules I have just listed, boxes, baskets and various containers are the best solution for organizing children’s toys and helping you to keep them in order. The containers as well as a simple idea are also easy to use because they can be placed almost anywhere: inserted into a shelving, hung on a wall or a door or even simply on the floor in a corner of the room.
On the market you can find containers to keep toys of all kinds in order, some generic, others specially designed for children’s bedrooms. In short, there are solutions to help you get a well-organized room. Here are the ones I suggest.
1. DIY Toy Storage Boxes

7. Ikea containers, boxes and baskets
Here are the most classic solutions offered by Ikea : plastic containers with wheels (there are in various colours), fancy boxes with lids, and canvas baskets for carrying everything. Practical, cheerful and cheap.
8. Modular solutions with baskets
For those who have a wall available to decorate, these Ikea furniture are ideal. These are shelves to be combined and filled with the relative baskets that slide along their rails as if they were convenient drawers.
9. Book displays
If among the toys you also have lots of children’s books , you might like these original wooden displays and find them very useful !
10. Beds with chests of drawers
Finally, a valid solution that you can adopt to store toys and much more – especially if you are thinking of renovating the bedroom – could be to buy a bed with one or more drawers underneath. This Ikea model for example could be for you.
Have you found the solution for organizing toys that’s right for you?
In any case, as well as getting the most suitable containers (which will surely help you organize the bedroom), be patient. The balance between family serenity and a perfect home is accepting the fact that, despite all the effort, a home with children will rarely be perfectly tidy.
