The princesses and superheroes of the NICU
Carnival party also for the very young of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Evangelical Hospital Bethany. On Mardi Gras parents found their children with some very special blankets!
In fact, each child was given a very special sheet, with an embroidered dress, chosen from the classics of the children’s favorite masks. Superheroes for boys and princesses for girls.
All the special clothes for little warriors were made by Mrs. Maria Rosaria Ignarra, the “grandmother of Sergio”, one of the little patients in the ward.
The initiative was also carried out thanks to the collaboration of the Pulcini Combattenti Onlus Association , and is part of the broader project of humanizing the care and well-being of the newborn and the parents.
The Director of the Maternal-Child Department, Marcello Napolitano explained to the press that “the Carnival party follows the similar initiative organized for Christmas, and represents a further step forward in the project to make our TIN more and more “tailor-made” of family” in order to further favor the parent-infant relationship and in particular the infant mother . The arrival of a preterm newborn is a situation that displaces the parents and the relationship with their child risks being compromised by the distance created by the hospital environment and in particular by the Intensive Care Unit. Initiatives like this and many others that we have activated in recent years have the objective ofmake the hospitalization of the little ones and their parents more comfortable in order to facilitate the natural evolution of the parent-infant relationship.”
Claudia Cavaliere , president of the Onlus Pulcini Combattenti added: “Superman, Batman, Ninja Turtle, Captain America and then the princesses Ariel, Jasmine, Belle, Rapunzel, with this initiative we want to give parents a message of positivity, also through the celebration of traditional festive moments such as Carnival” .
The Pulcini Combattenti association was born on the initiative of doctors, supervisors and parents of newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and supports the activities of the NICU and the children’s families.
In 2019, 2109 newborns were born at the Bethany Hospital , of which more than 230 were premature and of these about 60 weighing < 1500 g. These are infants who require special attention and highly specialized operators, as well as the constant closeness of their parents and in particular of their mothers, also to encourage breastfeeding. For the second time in the last three years, the mortality in this category of newborns was 0 and the morbidity in line with international standards.
