The 40 weeks of pregnancy

The weeks of pregnancy are counted from the date of the last menstrual period and are divided into three trimesters. Each week has special features for both you and your child: let’s see them together!

How many weeks is a pregnancy?

By convention, a pregnancy lasts 40 weeks , counting from the first day of the last menstrual flow. However, a delivery is considered full-term even if it occurs between 37 and 41 weeks .

Since the length of gestation is calculated based on the last period, this means that there is still no baby in the first and second weeks . In those days, in fact, the body will be preparing for ovulation and possible fertilization.

The development of the embryo therefore only begins in the third week , which corresponds to the first week of actual pregnancy . From this moment on, the rapid increase in beta-HCG and other pregnancy hormones will also begin, which will give rise to the first symptoms of conception within a few days or weeks .
