Pregnancy test with baking soda to find out the sex of the baby

The baking soda pregnancy test is one of the many traditional do-it-yourself tests to find out if you are expecting a baby. According to another belief, however, this method is actually used to find out if the mother is pregnant with a  boy or a  girl .

Sure, the baking soda pregnancy test is an easy and cheap way to find out the gender of your future baby, but does it really work? Waiting to find out together, we remind you that there are several possibilities to know, early and scientifically , if you are expecting a boy or a girl:

  • ultrasound scans and in particular morphological ultrasound ;
  • some invasive prenatal diagnostic techniques, such as CVS and amniocentesis , and non-invasive, such as fetal DNA analysis , performed to highlight any anomalies of the fetus.

How to take a baking soda pregnancy test

To do this home test, collect  the first urine of the morning  in a clean container (for example a plastic cup), taking care to wash your hands well first. This is because morning pee is usually more concentrated than the rest of the day.

The next step is to place a tablespoon of baking soda  in a basin and add roughly the same amount of urine . At this point, wait a few minutes to see if  a lot of foam begins to appear or if no reaction is observed.

Baking soda pregnancy test: when is it positive?

According to popular belief, if the urine starts to “sizzle” and form many bubbles, the test is positive and the woman is pregnant . If, on the other hand, no change or only a little foam appears, the result is to be considered negative.

Male or female with the bicarbonate test

As we have already mentioned, according to another traditional myth, the bicarbonate pregnancy test can also be used to predict the sex of the baby .

In this case, if the urine foams a lot,  it indicates that the woman is expecting a boy . If, on the other hand , it remains the same or forms a few bubbles , it indicates that a female is on the way . The results of the baking soda test are not reliable.

Is the bicarbonate test reliable?

Of course, this traditional method has no scientific foundation and should be considered a  simple game to try out of sheer curiosity.

As far as the sex of the baby is concerned, this theory is based on the fact that the acidity (i.e. pH) of a pregnant woman’s urine changes if she is expecting a boy or a girl. Sodium bicarbonate, in contact with some acids present in the urine, would therefore react by forming more or less foam.

However, there is no scientific evidence that the gender of the baby-to-be has any effect on the pH of a woman’s urine. In addition, many other factors can make pee more or less acidic, including:

  • diet
  • degree of hydration
  • urinary tract infections (such as  cystitis )
  • kidney stones

Because there are many variables that can affect the pH level of her urine, a woman may get different results if she tests for baking soda on different days multiple times in the same day.

So in conclusion?

The bicarbonate test has no scientific value and therefore does not represent a reliable method for determining the state of pregnancy or the sex of the unborn child . Better then to allocate this substance to other uses!
