How to perfume the rooms of the house in a natural way
Would you like to have the rooms always fresh and with a pleasant smell? Here are some ideas to perfume your home in a natural way or with a little “help”.
It will surely have happened to you, when entering the house with friends or relatives, to notice the presence of a pleasant perfume or, on the contrary, a bad smell.
In the first case, the surprise is decidedly pleasant enough to immediately give the sensation of entering a welcoming home.
If, on the other hand, unpleasant smells welcome us, the impression one receives is not as positive.
Well, don’t think this thing only happens in other people’s houses.
If you pay attention, bad smells often happen at home too and it’s not difficult to notice it every time we leave a room and come back after a while.
There can be many causes of bad smells : a diaper bag left open, the presence of pets, the use of cigarettes, humidity, an antique-smelling piece of furniture.
How to keep the house clean and fragrant every day?
The solution to free the environment from annoying smells is to try to find the cause and possibly eliminate it. If a cause is impossible to find (sometimes it happens), you can always resort to an air freshener , preferably natural.
But before the deodorant there is something else to do.
Ventilate the rooms
One of the most important things to keep your home clean and odor free is to ventilate the rooms. To do this, just open the doors and windows and let the fresh air in. Obviously it will be easier to do this in the summer, but let’s not forget that air exchange is also important in winter (if you are afraid of cold air, do it when the children are at school).
In addition to removing bad smells, fresh air gives new life to the house and avoids the concentration of strong odors which would then be impossible to cover even with a good deodorant.
Minimal but necessary cleaning
In addition to air exchange, cleaning the house frequently is another action to do to avoid bad smells in the rooms. If you don’t have much time to do it, you can focus on the common rooms from which unpleasant odors often originate, namely the kitchen and the bathroom.
You can help yourself with electric brooms for quick cleaning or if you have more time you can sanitize with steam , ideal for removing mold and bacteria, the main cause of annoying smells.
Certainly it is important to remember to empty the bins especially that of wet and that of children’s diapers.
How to perfume the rooms of the house
Once a minimum of cleaning has been done, you can think about finding the right air freshener . The choice depends on you, your taste and the type of room to perfume.
Below I will list some suggestions on how to perfume the house in a natural way avoiding, where possible, chemical products.
1. Plants and flowers
Plants and flowers are one of the most effective natural methods to perfume the house. In fact, at the moment of flowering they release a pleasant smell that spreads in all environments.
The most common scented flowers to put in the house are roses, lavender, hyacinth, lilium, jasmine.
However, remember that there are not only cut flowers. Among the various scented plants there are some, typical of the garden or terrace, which can also grow inside the house. They are for example fragrant geranium, Arabian jasmine, citrus fruits, eucalyptus, laurel, gardenia augusta, tea rose begonia, passion flower, these particularly perfumed varieties, whose aromas remain pleasantly in the air.
2. Potpourri
If you don’t have a green thumb and fresh plants and flowers aren’t your thing, you can use potpourri to keep a pleasant scent in the house .
Pot pourri are compositions made with dried flower petals and essential oils, or even with natural aromatic elements such as citrus peels, cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, rosemary, berries, spices.
Creating a potpourri of homemade perfumes is not difficult and you can do it too. All it takes is a little time to dry the flowers and the other elements that make it up. You can also help with essential oils.
In addition to perfuming the environment, they can become decorative elements to beautify your home.
3. Scented soaps
Putting scented soap bars on special bowls scattered almost everywhere is a good way to make small spaces and rooms such as the bathroom “smell good”. This is a system that I also use and I can guarantee you that if you use the right bars of soap and with a good scent, you will be surprised by the effectiveness. Obviously if you put them in the bathroom you can, indeed you must, use them. The more you use them the more they smell .
4. Natural flavors
Aromatic plants or certain types of fruit are perfect for covering odors, especially in the kitchen. You just have to arrange some of them in pots with earth or water, such as basil, rosemary or thyme.
One of the best known natural aromas for perfuming is the orange aroma with cloves. By combining both elements, a very sweet aroma will spread throughout the house. Simply poke cloves into an orange, place them on a platter, and let it do the rest. It will last for several days or even weeks.
5. Scented candles
Another very effective method to perfume the house is to use scented candles, preferably homemade with natural products. The variety of candles to make is infinite starting from the shape and colors, up to the most disparate fragrances. You can make candles from the most classic scents to those with home smells such as the scent of freshly washed clothes (ideal to put in the bathroom), up to cookie scented candles, particularly suitable for the kitchen. The choice to find the right aroma for us is to opt for the one that evokes our best memories.
6. Essential oils
Essential oils are the most used substances to perfume the house. These are oily substances of vegetable origin obtained from flowers, leaves, stems, roots. What you get is a perfume concentrate that should be used in small doses (really a few drops are enough). The most used essential oils are:
- Citrus fruits: orange, grapefruit, mandarin, lemon, citron, bergamot have a delicious aroma that tastes fresh and clean. Choose the one you prefer and put it in the entrance of the house . It will give a pleasant welcome to guests as they enter.
- Sandalwood, oak, pine and all woody essences are strong and decisive scents that are good for perfuming the bathroom . If you have a bathtub you can put a few drops in the water before taking a bath, in a pot pourri or diffuser to keep on a cabinet or in the water of radiator humidifiers.
- Lavender, lemon balm, chamomile, spikenard, myrtle or neroli have a more romantic scent with a calming and tranquilizing function. Promoting calm and peace, they are particularly suitable for the bedroom and to facilitate sleep in those who find it difficult to fall asleep.
- Jasmine, neroli, ylang-ylang, tiare flower, vanilla are pleasant scents that give the idea of cleanliness and often evoke sensations associated with the summer. For this reason they are particularly suitable for the living room or study.
- Mint and ucalyptus on the other hand, having a very refreshing smell, are suitable for particularly hot rooms in the house or in all those moments in which breathing is needed to facilitate breathing.
But how to use these oils?
There are various alternatives.
Diffusers : these are devices that allow the essence to disperse into the environment, without the need to mix it with water or other oils. There are electric ones and diffuser ones with sticks.
Burn essences : They are also an option for aroma. You need a candle and some vegetable olive or almond oil. A few drops of essential oil are added to this base.
Light bulb : in this case it is a rather home-made solution but it works. Just rub two drops of essential oil into an unlit light bulb. Once you turn it on, its heat will delicately release the scent.
And which one do you choose?
As you have seen, there is a great variety of essences with which to perfume the rooms of our home . Natural elements are a precious resource to contemplate, given the pleasant sensations they cause and their various advantages.
