How to clean the house with children without using detergents

Like most parents with small children in the house, you will probably have a cabinet full of cleaning products: floor detergents, bleach, bathroom cleaners, laundry sanitizers, surface disinfectants. Have you ever wondered how many of these products are actually indispensable? Have you ever read labels to check what they contain?

Most of these cleaning products (in addition to not being eco-sustainable), are not needed, but above all they do not need so many. Yes, it is true that with a small child at home you have to use them daily, but for those who care about the environment this is not the best. In fact, frequent use of chemical detergents, in addition to being harmful and having a significant environmental impact, can also cause allergies.

For this reason, more and more parents are deciding to reduce the use of these chemical detergents in favor of natural ones, often cheaper, non-harmful and equally effective to adequately sanitize the environments where children eat, crawl, play, sleep.

Cleaning the house with children with natural products

Contrary to what you are usually led to think, a good household cleaner does not need to have aggressive or chemical components to clean well and fight germs and bacteria. On the contrary, alternatives with natural products have been shown to be just as effective for ecological cleaning.

With this I don’t mean that we need to get paranoid and completely eliminate the household hygiene products we are most fond of, but it would already be a lot to start replacing them with ecological products that are on the market or, better still , with natural products. Very few are enough. Let’s see what they are!

White wine vinegar

Vinegar is an all natural cleaner and is an effective natural disinfectant! Making a vinegar-based cleaner is very easy. Although there are numerous “recipes” depending on the cleaning to be done, preparing a solution with half vinegar and half water is generally not wrong. In case you need a stronger cleaning action, you can also clean it with 100% white vinegar: it does not damage any surface (except marble so be careful!) and its acidity kills germs and bacteria, destroys odors and collects dirt.It can be used like any surface cleaner, therefore for: cleaning the table and the kitchen, rinsing glasses and plates or various containers, cleaning the microwave and other appliances, cleaning glass and floors, removing stains from carpets, cleaning the high chair after baby food, clean toys , to remove mold, to disinfect the bathroom and the potty (best if used with hot water).
And if you don’t like the smell, you can add a few drops of scented essential oil to the solution!

Cleaning and hygiene with Marseille soap

Marseille soap (the real one!) is full of virtues. It is a 100% natural product, it has no added dyes or synthetics and it is biodegradable (it must necessarily contain 72% vegetable oil). Its main use is mainly in laundry. It is used to wash baby clothes, it preserves the color and perfumes the laundry. Renowned for its hypoallergenic and antibacterial qualities, it is ideal for baby hygiene (in fact, many pediatricians recommend it).
With Marseille soap you can also do a lot of house cleaning: floors, walls, ceilings, kitchen, bathroom, crockery, etc.

Use microfiber cloths

If all the natural products that I have listed above are very useful for cleaning the house in an eco-friendly way, microfiber cloths are no different. Being composed of fibers that act as microscopic “hooks”, microfibers cloths “scratch softly” the surfaces and retain dust, dirt and absorb liquids a lot , much more than a normal dish towel.
Simply put, they clean better, reduce the amount of chemical cleaners, can be washed and reused, and last a very long time. Using microfiber cloths and natural products you can clean the bathroom, the floors where children crawl, the surfaces where children eat and play, toys and objects for the little ones.

Steam cleaning

Finally, I remind you that steam cleaning is also a very valid solution, an alternative to traditional methods, to sanitize and clean the house with children without using detergents.
In fact, steam alone and without the use of other detergents is able to dissolve dirt, remove stains, mold and encrustations, as well as sanitize surfaces by killing germs and bacteria. A healthy choice that respects the environment and children’s health.

I conclude with a tip. If you want to learn more and start using natural cleaning products, read opinions and reviews, ask mothers who already have experience with this green lifestyle, find out how to make the products yourself.
However, there are few and simple recommendations in terms of  hygiene in the home with small children: wash your hands often, sanitize the kitchen and bathroom, prepare baby food and dishes for the little ones in a safe way, ventilate the rooms often, manage animals well in home.
