Heels during pregnancy: can they be used or is it better to avoid them?

If you are a lover of high heels , you must have surely wondered if you can wear them even now that you are expecting a baby. In reality, there are no contraindications to wearing heels during pregnancy , provided they are used with caution and avoiding excessive heights .

Can you wear heels while pregnant?

The answer is yes, but without exaggerating! The best choice falls on a medium heel , about 3-4 cm , which, although not very high, represents a good compromise.

A higher height could further strain the spine , already overloaded by postural alterations that occur during pregnancy. High heels also hinder venous return , slowing blood circulation to the feet and ankles and worsening swelling caused by weight gain and hormonal changes.

Finally, another important aspect against high heels is the risk of losing balance , already compromised by the weight of the belly and the relaxation of the ligaments, with the consequent danger of falling .

Naturally this is not an absolute prohibition : in the case of special occasions, it is also possible to wear higher shoes, but for everyday life, especially in the third trimester , it is better to prefer more comfortable shoes. On the other hand, choosing shoes that are too low, such as flats , is also not advisable, as they could accentuate posture problems, resulting in back pain .

How to choose shoes during pregnancy?

The advice is to choose shoes that have a wide and comfortable insole  and that can be easily slipped on , considering that as the pregnancy progresses it will be complicated even just to get down to tie the laces!

It is also better that they do not have a too narrow toe , so as not to hinder circulation, and that they are made of a natural and soft material , preferably transpiring .
