Fun apps for kids to learn to read and write

A selection of apps for learning to read and write. How to use new technologies in a useful way.

After some time ago I dealt with apps useful for mothers and new parents and apps for children for drawing and coloring , today we’re talking about apps for learning to read and write.

We parents know how much interest children show in electronic devices with screens , such as phones and tablets. The familiarity they have with certain devices and the learning ability they show are truly impressive. But since children have this remarkable ability, why not take advantage of new technologies for educational purposes?

While always respecting the advice of paediatricians – therefore NO to devices before the age of 3/4 and NO to use for many hours – the use of tablets and smartphones , for example, can be a valid support, both during the summer and in the school period, to bring children closer to the alphabet and pre-graphism.

Applications to learn to read and write

There are so many applications for children to learn to read and write that you can find by now You can find both apps for iOS and Android to download, both free apps (which however may contain advertisements), and paid apps (which in any case cost only a few euros).
What is a little more difficult is finding good apps that are in Italian. In fact, the app stores abound pre-graphism applications that teach letters and the alphabet but since most of them are in a foreign language, they are not suitable for teaching the correct pronunciation of letters in Italian.

For this reason, I have selected a series of beautiful and fun apps in Italian that can help children aged 3 to 6 take their first steps in reading and writing, stimulating them to get to know consonants and vowels while having fun. Children will be able to use them on their own, although I recommend that you play with them or be present to supervise the activity especially if the children are small.

Applications for Android

Write ABCs

The Writing ABC application aims to teach children to recognize and write the letters of the alphabet accurately. Thanks to a simple and intuitive interface, interactive elements and nice animations, this app encourages the child to correctly draw the letters with their finger, an ability that will come in handy when they later have to write with a pen or pencil.

Thanks to the automatic guidance offered by the application, the exercises/games can be performed by children even without the need for an adult. A special mechanism ensures that each letter is spelled correctly.

Super ABC

Super ABC is a fun application that will help children to familiarize and learn the letters of the alphabet by playing. The educational games contained are used to know letters and sounds, learn to write letters, learn to read words, memorize letters, fix knowledge. The interface is simple and intuitive, the graphics are cute and colorful, and have fun sound effects.

Note that the application is paid but you can try it before buying it because it is free up to the letter F.

Writing with syllables

Writing with syllables is an educational application useful for children to learn to write with the syllables of the Italian language. There are tons of different words to play with and learn, all made up of two syllables.

By touching the right syllables the child must compose the word presented to you. Once the word is complete, the game starts over with a new word to compose.

ABC Gurus

ABC Gurus is an alphabet learning game suitable for preschoolers. Teach to learn phonemes by playing with the letters and listening to the sounds they make.

The game consists in choosing a letter of the alphabet by turning a wheel and having fun customizing it by coloring it, choosing between uppercase or lowercase, adding facial features and bizarre accessories. As the child plays and creates characters with the letter, he repeatedly hears the phonetic sounds and learns to associate them with each letter.

The sound of the letters

The Sound of Letters is an interesting app especially suitable for children taking their first steps in primary school. In particular, this app contains sound games that are very useful for stimulating and preparing the little ones for reading.

The sound of the letters develops in four different progressive games which invite the child to associate phonemes with the corresponding images, to record the pronunciation of a word and listen to it again, to memorize the shape and sound of the single letters of the alphabet, to associate the letters and words to images, to write the first words through a mobile alphabet. The app also allows parents to set the language among those available and to set the type of alphabet on which to practice (cursive, script, uppercase).

Discovery and writing alphabet

It’s easy to learn when you’re having fun. Alphabet Discovery and Writing allows the youngest, but also older users, to discover, learn and write the alphabet.
Suitable for all parents and educators who wish to offer their ‘little ones’ an easy and fun tool for learning the alphabet

These are just some of the apps suitable for bringing children closer to the world of reading and writing that I have chosen from those present in the app stores.

But if you know of any other good apps that help kids learn to read and write, you can mention them in the comments!
