In the 15th week of pregnancy, the baby is developing rapidly but it is too early to feel its movements. The belly begins to grow and from this moment on it could be useful to attend a gentle gymnastics course, to prevent back discomfort that could appear in the coming months.

How your body changes

Growing uterus

The uterus has added the size of a small melon and has now passed the pelvis. Your tummy may already be showing and making you feel the need for looser, more comfortable clothes . For some moms, it might even be time to do some maternity shopping .

The growth of the uterus pushes the abdomen outward and changes the position of the spine: to prevent the onset of back pain , try to pay attention to your posture and avoid lifting heavy objects .

If you haven’t already done so, the advice is to enroll in a course of gentle gymnastics , yoga or swimming , to strengthen the muscles and help them better support the weight of the uterus.

Breast? Let’s talk about!

Many moms-to-be are happy with their fuller shapes , while others experience pain or discomfort from the extra weight of their breasts, which can contribute to back pain. To alleviate these symptoms, the advice is to use a comfortable bra that can support the breasts well, preferably without an underwire. Have you noticed yellowish discharge from your nipples? Don’t worry: this is colostrum , the first milk produced by your breasts. If leakage becomes a problem, you can use nursing pads in your bra. In any case, if your breasts show any changes that concern you, do not hesitate to speak to your gynecologist or doctor.midwife.

Weight and power

Now that nausea is a distant memory (or so it is hoped) you may experience a sharp increase in appetite. Try not to overeat and maintain a varied and balanced diet that provides your child with all the nutrients he needs. Keep in mind that, for women who begin their pregnancy at a normal weight , the expected weight gain at the end of pregnancy should be between 11.5 and 16 kg and that in the second trimester it should average 4.5 -5.5Kg . In this regard, however, it is important to emphasize that every woman is different and whether the gynecologist or themidwife to assess the correct weight gain for your specific situation.

Distinguish the light…

  • Alpha-fetoprotein test

Between the 15th and 17th week of pregnancy, the alpha  fetoprotein (AFP) test , a maternal blood screening test that is used to identify the presence of neural tube defects, can be performed . This exam is often replaced by other earlier and more reliable tests, such as the fetal DNA test and the combined test (nuchal translucency + Bi-test).

Advice from the 15th week of pregnancy

  • It’s the right time to enroll in a  prenatal gym class : activities such as stretching , yoga, pilates and above all swimming can be very useful for strengthening back muscles and improving posture, helping to prevent back pain back .
  • Avoid making efforts : if you really can’t avoid lifting a weight, always remember to lower yourself by bending your knees and not your torso.
  • If you’ve already started experiencing back pain, try sleeping on your side , preferably your left side, with your legs bent and a pillow between your knees. This position promotes proper spinal alignment and can help reduce pain. You can use  pregnancy support pillows if you want .
  • Do you feel in great shape and are you experiencing an increase in sex drive ? Unless there are specific contraindications from the gynecologist, sex during pregnancy is considered safe and even beneficial. If you have poor vaginal lubrication , ask your obstetrician or midwife for recommendations on a water-based lubricant .
