Do you want one, two or three children? Here’s what age you should start looking for them
Now the world goes on (alas) by dint of numbers, calculators and statistics. A team of Dutch scientists from the University of Rotterdam has developed a new system that, based on how many children you want, tells the woman the right age to start the search for the first child and the various probabilities related to age.
To be able to make these calculations they examined fertility information from 58000,<> women.
Data in hand have estimated that a woman who wants 3 children to have a high chance of success of succeeding must start by the age of 23.
If the woman wants only one child, she should not wait beyond the age of 32 to have a 90% chance of succeeding.
Those who want two children and 90% success rates should start by the age of 27. If, on the other hand, they wait for 38 years, the probability drops progressively below 50%.
In the following table the ages calculated by the researchers within which to start looking for a pregnancy based on how many children you want to have:
Natural conception | |||
Age of mother | |||
Probability of succeeding | 1 child | 2 children | 3 children |
90% | 32 | 27 | 23 |
75% | 37 | 34 | 31 |
50% | 41 | 38 | 35 |
The researchers with these results say they do not want to force the search for a child but only to make women aware of the chances of pregnancy based on age. In short, one more tool to “plan” or better reconcile career and family. Women, unlike men, have a very short period of time for action if they want to go to university, find a job, form a stable profession and also obtain some economic stability before starting a family.
The average age for the first child has increased dramatically over the past 40 years. If in the 70s the average age was around 22 years, now we are going towards 30.
