DIY musical instruments for children to discover sounds
I guess you all know how important noises, sounds, music are to a child’s development and life. For example, did you know that music can facilitate the learning of mathematics, improve reading and help children in concentration?
To begin with, one of the simplest things we can do to stimulate the development of young children’s auditory sense is to allow them to discover the wonders of sounds by playing.
DIY musical instruments for kids easy to make
Obviously to explore noises and sounds and entertain children with music there is no need to have real musical instruments. In the house there are many resources available or objects to be recycled from which to take inspiration and thanks to which you can build many DIY musical instruments for children (wind, percussion, string) with which to play.
Here are some ideas to take inspiration from. You can find the tutorial by clicking on the link.
Rattles and Music shakers
Music shakers, i.e. those instruments that make noise by shaking them, can be created with a bit of everything: with plastic bottles, paper boxes, cardboard tubes. Depending on the content that is put inside (seeds, sand, salt, lentils, chickpeas, buttons) the sound will be different.
One of the best known music shakers is the Rain Stick easily made with a long cardboard tube filled just enough with rice or when at your disposal to create a sound similar to rain.
Another extremely easy music shaker to make is noisy boxes to build using toilet rolls, egg packs or small plastic bottles. Of course you can give free rein to the imagination of your child by allowing him to color the boxes with tempera colors.
The Maracas
Maracas are one of theCutest DIY musical instruments for kids to play with. They are built in pairs, played by shaking them and can be filled with rice, salt, sand, seeds. To make them, all you need are two plastic spoons, some adhesive tape and the gift box of chocolate eggs filled as desired. Just five minutes to build an instrument that I’m sure will be a lot of fun to play.
The Xylophone
Another nice tool that is easy to make is the xylophone to be made with glasses of water . In fact, glasses filled with different quantities of water will be enough to create a musical game that children will love to play. To make the game even more interesting, you can color the water with food coloring. Equipped with a wooden stick you can teach them to play easy musical sequences.
The Drum and the sticks
The drum made with tin cans is undoubtedly the tool that children love the most and with which we have certainly played. Easy to play but also to build, simply cover the opening of the jars (which can also be of various sizes) with balloons and fix them with elastic bands. And to build beautiful chopsticks for the DIY drum, wooden sticks covered with scraps of cloth are enough.
The Tambourines
Another easy instrument for children to play with is the paper tambourine , a percussion instrument with rattles. To make it, just pair two paper plates and apply metal caps on the edge. It will take a little patience and precision, but the end result will be a perfect toy for playing with music.
In the absence of caps, it is possible to build another type of Tambourine, The One With Balls tags. You will need an old ribbon spool, a ribbon and two wooden balls. Children will be able to discover the sound by rotating the tambourine.
The guitar
If you have very young children, a good way to make them discover some sounds is to build the guitar with rubber bands tags. Creating it is very simple: all you need is a container (a box or a pan) that acts as a sound box and some rubber bands that you will have to arrange around making sure that they differ in tension and thickness. In this way each one will sound different from the others when the child enjoys plucking them.
The bell bells
If it is true that playing is fun, dancing and playing at the same time is even more so. Here then is a wonderful suggestion for making nice rattles to put on children’s ankles or wrists tags. If you are skilled with knitting needles you can make the cuffs yourself, otherwise you can use the cuffs of old sweaters or gloves and fix some bells to shake while dancing or clapping in time.
Music station
If you have space and want to give children the opportunity to discover more sounds and noises in one place, you can build a Music Station . To make it you can use a wooden pallet or pallet to which you can fix old pots and pans, lids or even the metal pieces of an old xylophone now in disuse. All elements that the child can beat at will with wooden sticks or ladles.
