DIY kindergarten kit: many ideas to save money

Have you seen the calendar? We arrived in September and soon kindergartens and schools will reopen! That’s why I’m sure that these days you are thinking about how to prepare all the layette for kindergarten (honestly I envy you a little… I really liked DIY and prepare bibs, wipes, aprons for my baby 🙂).

Most schools generally communicate in advance everything that children must have, so you should not have major problems in preparing the layette for kindergarten, which usually consists of:

  • one or more cotton laundry bags
  • a change of clothes, better if comfortable and of heaviness and usefulness suitable for the season
  • an underwear change such as bodysuits, panties and tank tops, socks
  • More bibs
  • wipes and towels (preferably with hook to hang them)
  • a mattress or sleeping bag
  • sheet and/or nap cover
  • A clothes-saving apron for older children doing manual activities

Some of these things you will already have (perhaps the older brother / sister), others you will have to buy. However, for those who have a little manual skills with needle and thread or for those who have a mother, aunt or grandmother who knows how to sew, there are many solutions to save money and create a DIY layette for the alternative and unique kindergarten. Here are some ideas to take inspiration from.

Layette for kindergarten do it yourself

Cloth nursery bags

The cotton bags are used to contain the baby’s changes and personal items. Even if they are easily found on the market, the Kindergarten Bag is one of those things that many mothers try to make themselves. Sewing a fabric bagis quick and easy, all you need is a sewing machine and a scrap of fabric. In the link that I leave you,

Bibs for lunch

If sewing bags for kindergarten is easy, sewing bibs is even easier! With cotton cloth (also recycled old shirts) and terry cloths, or with t-shirts that are no longer used, you can create bibs for the kindergarten really nice and cheap.

Covers for nap

For the afternoon nap many kindergartens ask that the child has his own blanket. If you already have one you are in luck, otherwise you can make it yourself in fleece (which is very cheap), in plush cotton or even in wool if you know how to knit or crochet.

Bedbag

To make babies and children sleep comfortably and warmly, some kindergartens, both in nurseries and nursery schools, require a sleeping bag. Being a real sack closed on the sides and bottom, teachers and mothers find it very practical because it avoids the use of a sheet and blanket. There are many ways to save money and create homemade sleeping bags tags. Here are some suitable for small children→ How to make DIY sleeping bags

and here’s one suitable for older children → Kindergarten Mat Tutorial . In this case it is an open sack with a blanket sewn on the side. Basically a comfortable mattress to put on the cot or directly on the ground and roll up. Very practical.

Apron do it yourself

Sewing an apron is a demanding thing and requires the hand of someone who knows how to use the sewing machine. It certainly allows you to save money and create an apron with a fabric chosen by us (which will be better than the synthetic ones with which they have recently made many aprons on the market). To help you, I leave you a link where you will find a video divided into two parts that

Much simpler and within everyone’s reach instead is to sew a clothes-saving apron , that is one of the sleeveless ones that children are put on when they have to do creative activities. You can sew both cloth and waterproof fabric. You can also follow the related tutorials for these: polka dot apron and patterned apron.

How to customize the nursery set

A very important thing that is often requested by the kindergarten and that you will have to remember to do is the customization of the linen and the kindergarten set . In a nutshell, it is a good idea to write your child’s name and surname or a sign of recognition on every garment, towel, bib and so on . To do this you can:

  • buy special pens to write on the fabric without washing discoloring the writing.
  • buy adhesive labels to attach to garments and linen simply by ironing. There are both white writable and already with the name printed and can be found for sale in haberdashery or even online.
  • embroider the name with a needle and thread  and if you need it you can find here → the scheme of the letters of the alphabet  to follow.
  • Sew Strips of Fabric in hidden positions and write the name on them.

Alternatively, if you just need to customize the kindergarten set with symbols or signs of recognition (such as animals or other designs) you can create Fabric Applications to be sewn on bibs, cotton bags, aprons, towels and on whatever you need.
