Diaper dermatitis: recognize it and treat it
The use of normal disposable diapers often leads the child to have a red bottom. In some situations, a real dermatitis develops, called diaper dermatitis (or rash).
Diaper dermatitis is a frequent condition that worries new parents, dealing with a newborn for the first time, but which can be tackled by adopting the correct precautions.
To clarify all doubts, we made use of the scientific advice of the specialists of the Birth Center of Humanitas San Pio X.
Why is baby’s skin so delicate?
The skin of the newborn during the first weeks of life undergoes many modifications, gradually adapting to the new conditions. The newborn has suddenly gone from a life completely immersed in the amniotic fluid to the open air, and in contact with new and sometimes synthetic substances such as diapers.
The skin of the newborn is also very thin , its thickness is three times less than that of the adult’s skin.
Finally, the skin of the newborn does not produce a sufficient quantity of sebum , a substance that helps protect the skin not only from the substances with which it comes into contact, but also from dryness, which can in turn cause skin lesions.
How does diaper rash manifest itself?
Dermatitis appears in the diaper area where the skin is attacked by irritants such as pee and baby feces. Even rubbing with the diaper, sweating and maceration can favor its onset.
It manifests itself with more or less extensive redness in the areas in contact with the diaper. Diaper dermatitis should never be overlooked because they can lead to secondary candida or bacterial infections.
How to manage diaper rash?
Prevention is done first of all with proper hygiene. The diaper should be changed often , to avoid that the baby’s skin remains in contact with the irritating substances of pee and feces for a long time.
When changing the diaper, the child should be washed under running water, with warm water, using non-foaming and perfume-free detergents.
It is recommended not to use commercially available wet wipes , which, if on the one hand make diaper changes quick, on the other they can favor the appearance of dermatitis.
The culotte must be dried very well, paying attention to the folds, and if necessary, use a zinc oxide paste, but in small quantities. To learn more about the subject and get advice on pregnancy, childbirth and returning home, discover MamaBook.
Dermatitis should not be underestimated and should always be checked by the pediatrician if they persist or worsen, because they can be a symptom of other medical conditions or specific allergies.
