Contribution for heterologous PMA for couples residing in Sardinia

The Sardinia region has allocated a fund of 350,000 euros for the year 2019 to be allocated to couples residing in Sardinia, who request access to heterologist PMA techniques .

These treatments can be carried out in public or private structures accredited nationally and internationally.

Requirements to access the grant

To request the contribution for heterologous MAP, i.e. with the donation of male (spermatozoa) or female (oocytes) gametes, the couple must meet the following requirements:

  • have been resident in Sardinia for at least 2 years;
  • be married or cohabiting
  • the age of the woman must be less than 46 years
  • must have performed a number of treatment cycles of heterologous PMA not exceeding 3

Amount of the contribution

The quota foreseen for the couple that faces a PMA route is the following (based on the type of route):

  • heterologous fertilization with donor sperm through intrauterine insemination (IUI): €1,500 (including €500 for drugs).
  • heterologous in vitro fertilization (IVF) with donor sperm : €3,500 (including €500 for medicines).
  • heterologous in vitro fertilization (IVF) with donor oocytes : €4,000 (including €500 for medicines).

If the cost incurred by the couple is higher than this amount, the difference is paid by the patients.

How to request the grant

The application must be presented to the Social Health District of residence in the form of self-certification ” according to the dedicated form together with the health certification, prepared by a specialist doctor who carries out his activity at a regional or national MAP center (*), specifying the indication clinic to the techniques of heterologous PMA “.

If the couple intends to use a foreign center to proceed with the heterologous MAP, they must specify the reasons that led them not to choose a national center.

In addition to the completed self-certification form, it is necessary to attach to the application:

  • Health certification compiled by a specialist doctor who carries out his activity at a regional or national PMA center where the motivation for appealing to the heterologist is explained. (For requests abroad it is mandatory to also specify the reason why the patient cannot perform the same service in a national centre).
  • Estimate of health expenses issued by the chosen centre
  • Any previous letter of authorization
  • Copy of valid identity documents.

Where to bring the documentation

The completed documentation must be delivered to the “Extra-Regional Admissions” office of the health district.

If the couple is eligible for the contribution, the authorization is issued within a maximum of one week of the request.

If the couple will have ART treatment in a public structure, the reimbursement is made directly between the public structures concerned, but at the time of the application, the patient can request the advance of travel expenses to the extent of 70% of the total expense.

In the event that the couple makes use of an accredited private facility or a foreign centre, “the total expense must be advanced by the patient who, however, can request advance payment of health and travel expenses in the amount of 70%, attaching the health expenditure estimate issued by the disbursing Structure and the one for travel expenses .
