Christmas decorations for the home: 10 DIY ideas to do right away!

Christmas is the sum of many things: family reunions, special meals, gifts and, of course, decorations and decorations! And what’s the best way to prepare for this moment if not giving the house a unique and charming touch with DIY decorations?

In this winter period, forced to stay at home for a long time, thinking about Christmas decorations for the house can be a moment of relaxation for the whole family.

Although the most common thing in these cases is to buy ready-made decorations online or in specialized shops, I have noticed with great joy that there is a return to making DIY Christmas decorations. In fact, creating handmade decorations and having fun decorating your home isn’t that difficult.

Indeed it can be an intelligent, ethical and economical way to decorate the house through everyday objects such as jars, paper, wool, scraps of fabric, pine cones, wood and twigs. All you need is a little imagination and creativity to transform these objects into original Christmas decorations. In fact, homemade decorations are beautiful even if imperfect and if you have children you can get involved in this activity.

Christmas decorations for the home: 10 DIY ideas

In the past I have suggested some beautiful ideas to create decorations with children , so today I would like to inspire you with a little more “grown up” ideas by showing you how to create beautiful Christmas decorations for the house. They are suitable both for those of you who have a little experience and dexterity but also for those who love creativity even if they don’t have great manual skills.

DIY and low cost Christmas trees

Let’s start with some ideas for creating the Christmas tree, the quintessential Christmas decoration that can’t be missing at home. In fact, Christmas trees are perfect for creating the Christmas atmosphere, for letting our imagination fly and creating a very original design at home. With a very limited budget, both by recycling materials that we have at home and by using very low-cost products, we can create beautiful and original DIY Christmas trees that we can invent every year.

For example, if we have a corner of the house where we want to create a discreet and space-saving Christmas atmosphere, we can create a set of colored trees with polystyrene cones (which cost very few euros) and some leftover wool that we have at home.

Another idea that is as simple and cheap as it is incredibly scenic to decorate the house is to draw many Christmas trees of different shapes and colors on a wall with Washi Tape (decorative tape).

For those of us looking for an ecological tree, a good idea is to use old branches collected in the park or found in the summer at the seaside to create a wooden tree to hang on the wall . With some Christmas lights and some decorations, it will look great!

DIY door wreaths

Another Christmas decoration for the house that is very popular are the garlands outside the door. In fact, if you think about it, it is the first decoration we see upon entering the house and the first one that welcomes our guests. We can create Christmas wreaths in many ways but above all using natural elements such as branches, leaves, berries, pine cones or materials found at home such as wool, fabric, trimmings, bells, decorative balls.

For example, do you like this garland? I made it myself using a polystyrene crown and thick wool I had at home. To do it you don’t need great skills but just tie the threads. The result is a decidedly effective Christmas garland, beautiful, cheerful and colourful, soft and fluffy just the way I like them.

This type of garland, on the other hand, can be made using natural elements such as branches, pine cones, berries. To give it a more Christmas touch, we can add artificial elements such as balls, bells, fabric ribbons.

Table decorations

Another thing that is usually decorated during the Christmas period is the table . The Christmas decorations that can be created and placed on the table (not only on Christmas day) are the most varied. They range from fabric runners in typical Christmas colors to precious crochet doilies , from centerpieces created with natural elements to handmade lanterns with recycled material, from Christmas placemats to colored place cards. Everything contributes to creating a Christmas atmosphere and atmosphere in the room.

Country centerpiece

Here’s a lovely idea to create a country-style centerpiece. A wooden tablet is enough to fix twigs, candles, pine cones, biscuits, dried oranges (even fake ones).

Wool centerpiece

Do you have some furry wool? Well, wrap it around a polystyrene crown and add handmade poinsettias on top (crochet if you know how to work it or fabric if you know how to sew): here’s a splendid DIY Christmas centerpiece !

Christmas lanterns

Another type of decoration that is particularly suitable for decorating the house and not just the table are the do-it-yourself lanterns. They can be made by recycling glass jars of different shapes and sizes and decorating them with natural elements. A candle or artificial lights to put inside will create a magical atmosphere.

Placeholder cutlery holder

Here’s a very simple and quick sewing project for the Christmas table which is at the same time useful and colorful to brighten up the atmosphere of the house. These are cutlery trays to put on the table that can be used, by customizing them a bit, even as a placeholder.

Christmas coasters

Another type of DIY work to decorate the house that I suggest you do are these original cork Christmas decorations , to be used as Christmas coasters but also as Christmas place cards or hanging decorations. They are easy to do, just need a little dexterity with the drawing.

Have you seen how many beautiful home decorating ideas you can prepare this year? Choose the one you liked the most or the one you think best suits your abilities and get to work.
Decorating season is officially open!
