Can the Moon Affect the Due Date?

Could the date of birth of the future baby depend on the phase of the moon? Let’s find out together!

According to a popular belief, handed down from generation to generation, there is a link between the moon and childbirth . Specifically, the full moon would increase the odds of labor.

But is it really so? We know that the moon affects the tides and can also affect the sleep-wake rhythm, but can it really affect the baby’s birth date ?

The answer is no , even if it would be natural to associate the lunar calendar with the menstrual cycle (which, like the lunar months, has an average duration of 28 days). Several studies, in fact, have shown that, statistically, there are no differences between the number of children born with the full moon and with the other lunar phases .

Likewise, it is proved that  the moon has no influence on the sex of the unborn child , as another popular legend would have it. That said, it can still be fun to try to guess whether the bow will be pink or blue with the conception lunar calendar game .

Influence of the moon on labor and delivery

But why should the moon affect the  due date ? The explanation is simple. It is thought that birth can be influenced by gravitational pull, as happens with the tides : in the same way, the amniotic fluid would be attracted outwards, leading to the breaking of the waters and initiating labor.

A second reflection instead starts from the life cycle, which in a woman is divided into phases like the lunar cycle. The growing moon corresponds to childhood and adolescence. The full moon at the period of fertility, while the waning moon at menopause and old age. This vision is not strictly linked to the moment of labor, but it would seem to justify the great influence that the full moon could have on childbirth.

Lunar calendar and gender of the child

According to another popular tradition, the moon  could also influence the sex of the future baby  at the time of conception. If fertilization took place on a full moon day  (or rather in the 24 hours of a full moon, a white moon in the calendar), a  girl is more likely to be born . If, on the other hand, the conception took place near the  new moon  (in the 24 hours, black moon in the calendar) it is more probable that a  child will be born .

Naturally, even in this case it is only one of the many legends born to satisfy the curiosity of future parents , who since the positive pregnancy test have been wondering about the sex of the baby on the way.

Before making definitive decisions such as the color of the layette or the future bedroom, it is therefore better to be patient and wait for the confirmation of the morphological ultrasound
