Conception

Can I get pregnant if I urinate after intercourse?

Among the many false myths about sex spread among young and old, we also find the one according to which  if a woman urinates after intercourse  she cannot get pregnant .

Some couples therefore resort to this practice as a sort of do-it-yourself contraceptive method , while others, looking for a child, carefully avoid it in order not to hinder possible conception .

The reality is that peeing after intercourse does not affect your chances of pregnancy in any way.

On the other hand, however, this habit has positive effects on women’s health and for this reason it is good to continue to maintain it. Let’s see together why.

Is it true that if I pee after intercourse I won’t get pregnant?

No, it’s completely false.

If you have had unprotected intercourse , urine will not “wash” the sperm out of the vaginal canal, nor will it kill it. This is because, from an anatomical point of view, urine and sperm follow two totally separate paths.

In fact, pee does not come out through the vagina, but through the urethra , a small tube that starts from the bladder and opens just above the vaginal orifice .

On the contrary, after unprotected intercourse, any sperm will be deposited right inside the vagina and from there they will go back up to reach the uterus and fallopian tubes, where conception can take place.

Is it advisable not to pee after intercourse to get pregnant?

For the same reasons we just mentioned, refraining from peeing after sex doesn’t increase your chances of conceiving . But that’s not all: it is a practice to be avoided, because it favors the onset of annoying urinary infections , such as cystitis.

Urinating after intercourse: what are the benefits?

Peeing after sex doesn’t affect your chances of conceiving, but it’s a good habit to adopt  because it reduces the risk of urinary tract infections .

In fact, sexual intercourse favors the establishment of this type of infection, due to the close proximity between the vagina and the female urethra (and between the vagina and the rectum, in the case of anal intercourse ), which facilitates the passage of bacteria between these two different body areas.

On the other hand, it is important to point out that  urinating after sex has no effect on the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases , such as HIV or human papillomavirus .

In conclusion

If you’re trying to get pregnant, urinating after intercourse won’t reduce your chances of getting pregnant, but it will help protect you from pesky urinary infections , which tend to be more common after so-called “fertile day marathons.”

If, on the other hand, you want to avoid getting pregnant , talk to your gynecologist : he will be able to advise you on the contraceptive method that best suits your needs.
